What Is a Contraceptive Diaphragm?

Diaphragm is a birth control method used by women. The diaphragm itself is made from silicone. It is inserted inside of the vagina to cover the cervix and works as a barrier which stops the sperm from reaching the cervix. How Is the Diaphragm used?

Do not remove the diaphragm immediately after sexually intercourse. It should be removed at least after 6 hours from the sexual intercourse. Contraceptive diaphragm should not be kept longer than 12 hours inside of the vagina. If you still continue to have sexual intercourse within the 24 hours, use another contraceptive method like a condom. Remove the diaphragm by sticking your index finger under the rim and gently pulling it out. After removal it should be washed well with mild soap and warm water. It is also important to completely dry it with a clean cloth, put it in its original container and store it in a room temperature away from direct sunlight.

Diaphragms are not recommended to use during the menstrual cycle. Use another contraceptive method, like a condom instead.

For How Long Should I Use a Diaphragm?

Diaphragms should be changed after every two years, sometimes even sooner. It all depends from the way how you store it. If you clean and dry it correctly after use, if you store it in its original content and keep it away from the sunlight than it can be used for a while. Instead, if you notice any change in its color or if you notice any tear, you should visit your gynecologist and change it. You should also see a gynecologist and probably change your contraceptive diaphragm if you have gained or lost more than 10 pounds recently, if you have had a child or if you notice that your diaphragm does not fit well any more.
